So, you just walked out of DNOS Art & Ink Cave with some fresh ink. Whether it’s your first piece or you’re adding to a full sleeve, the work doesn’t stop when you leave the chair. The way you treat your tattoo over the next two weeks determines how vibrant and sharp it will look for years to come.
To make things easy, we’ve broken down our official aftercare instructions into this handy guide.
Phase 1: The Saniderm Shield
Most of our tattoos are protected with Saniderm, a medical-grade, breathable, waterproof bandage.
- Duration: Keep your Saniderm on for 24 to 48 hours, depending on what your artist advised.
- Early Removal: If you notice excessive fluid buildup (it might look like an “ink bubble”) or if the edges start peeling back to expose the tattoo, it’s okay to take it off a bit early.
- The Pro Tip: To remove it comfortably, peel it off gently under warm running water. This helps loosen the adhesive and prevents tugging on the skin.
Phase 2: Cleaning and Hydration
Once the bandage is off, your tattoo is technically an open wound. Keeping it clean is your #1 priority.
- Wash Your Hands: Never touch a healing tattoo with dirty hands.
- The Gentle Wash: Use fragrance-free antibacterial soap and lukewarm water. Use your fingers to gently wash away any plasma or leftover ointment.
- Pat, Don’t Rub: Use a clean paper towel to pat the area dry. Never use a bath towel, as they can harbor bacteria and the fibers can snag on scabs.
- The Moisture Barrier: Apply a thin layer of ointment 2–3 times daily for 7 to 14 days.
Recommended Products:
- Hustle Butter: Our top pick (find it on Amazon or at Ulta).
- Cold-pressed Coconut Oil: A great natural alternative.
- A&D Ointment: Use this specifically if you notice a rash or heavy irritation.
Phase 3: The Golden Rules (The “Do Nots”)
To avoid infection and fading, commit these to memory:
- No Scratching: As it heals, it will itch. Do not pick or peel the scabs. Let them fall off naturally, or you risk pulling the ink out with the scab.
- Stay Out of the Water: No baths, pools, hot tubs, or lakes for at least 2 weeks. Showers are fine; soaking is not.
- Sun Protection: Keep your tattoo out of direct sunlight and tanning beds until it is fully healed. Once healed, always use SPF to keep the colors bright.
- No Harsh Chemicals: Never use alcohol or hydrogen peroxide on your tattoo.
Bonus Tips for Fast Healing
Your body does the work, so give it the fuel it needs. Stay hydrated and eat well to help your skin regenerate faster. Also, stick to loose, breathable clothing so your tattoo doesn’t rub against fabric, which can cause irritation.
